Here below is an example of a QR code designed by QRCodesOfNote.com that is a high resolution, scalable file delivered by email to be used on business cards such as the Avery product which come with a down loadable template for those do-it-your-selfers who know their way around a printer. Others could have this file printed on business cards at their local FedEx-Kinko’s who also offer free delivery and this file could be sent to them as an email attachment.
In any case, this scandalous and inviting QR code links directly to the Amazon Kindle download purchase site of the book and incorporates features from the book’s cover. A good thing to do with these cards is to pass them out like calling cards because they are indeed the calling card of an author. We could include, in print, the authors link for those that don’t have a smart phone but as we all know, more and more often these people are dinosaurs, relics, and just a major holiday or phone plan expiration away from getting a smart phone. When they do, I am sure they will download the Red Laser scanner app and check out this striking QR code. You should, too.
There is no one good way to market a book. There are countless resources available on-line and in print which offer ways to get the word out about your volume. I will give you a free marketing idea that I have had personal success with and I encourage you to give this a try.
People in sales will tell you that the best way to get a product sold is to put in directly in the hands of the public. I will tell you that one sure fire way to get your book in the hands of the public is to embed QR code with your first chapter or first several pages. Include a link to where to purchase the rest of the book. Print your QR code matrix on a book mark and give that book mark to every one you see using a Smart phone. Add a call to action such as “What Lola wants…” or “Meet Shorty”. I personally would include some classy or beguiling artwork such as the art at the bottom.
Now you have one more way to market your book. Look at some of my examples of where I did just that with QR codes. I leave these in public places. On bulletin boards. I treat them just like they are business cards and you should, too.

I observe what people do, I ask questions and I monitor results. I publish anthologies. Stay with me. With all of that nerdy monologue I just presented I wanted to ask this:
Why in the world don’t authors, writers and poets who blog or otherwise share their works online include contact information?
I seek out talented new voices for publication and I get quite excited when I have read a blog piece that grabs me by the lapels. Then I look and look and, yawn, look for how to contact this wordsmith and I must say that the majority of them do not include an email address. The reason they publicly share their talent is for some sort of recognition, introduction, appreciation or other acknowledgement. Are you one of these persons? You need to help yourself and help interested entities by including some sort of contact information. The benefit is that your scribbles may be invited for inclusion into another project which could continue or launch your success.
There are plenty of easy ways to share your contact information without complete invasion of your privacy. One could create an email address on Google or Yahoo. Google even has a free phone number service called Google voice. You could add yourself to Gravatar where you can offer up all of your online presences. I really don’t have a preference for how you do it, but let me assure you that in order to be “discovered” you need to be “discoverable”. Go to it.
Recently, I launched a new unit of creativity. I have a wonderful creative staff of nerds and we develop artistic QR codes with information embedded to promote products, services, events, etc. You will notice, if you look a little closely, that the black and white QR codes are appearing in magazine ads and coupon mailers. I like to put them on my website as well. They are a tad boring in black and white though, and consumers may just pass them by. Add some color, brand, tilt them, curve them and you raise an eyebrow… people want to pull out their favorite modern decoder rings, aka, their Smart phones and do the cool thing by being nosey, -er high-tech curious, and see just what your code says.
What? You don’t have any QR code on your book or in your marketing or on your website? Um. You need to fix that, pronto. It is not costly, it is “green” and it is hip. Get one, print it on a sticker and place on a flat surface.
What is a great way to increase your books sales? QR code (QRC). Use QR code embedded with an excerpt or a teaser along with a link to your book purchase URL, this is the fun/cool way to flip through your book. People buy fancy cell phones and want to use their toys every chance they get. Smart phones as well as Blackberry’s, almost any phone with a camera can have a QR code scanner app downloaded (I will share more on which phones can read QR next post). Put the embedded QR code onto a sticker and add the sticker to your existing book. Include a QRC in your cover, be it back or front. Say something enticing like “meet Shorty…”
Zig Ziglar used QRC upfront and bold on his cover and this man is a decades long champion of success, an authority on how it is done and he is using QR codes. While you certainly can incorporate a standard black and white QR code into your marketing plans, you surely are not limited to “standard”. In the right hands, QRC can be colored, contorted, and/or imbued with your brand. We all want covers that reach out to the reader and keep them wanting more.

You want to save money and edit your work yourself? Many writers do. I personally want you to know that editing is the single largest factor that separates the books published by a large publisher and a self publisher. It is the “tell”, it is the glaring thing that discredits self-publishing. So, if you have not combed over your work with a fine tooth comb, then you should because that is the one strongest area that could make or break your success. Now, I am not saying that it must be grammar perfection at in its highest form but I do mean to suggest that tons of little errors make your work weak.

You say you can just do-it-yourself, the publishing of your work? Well, I am very pleased for you! I also offer an anthology book where you can buy marketing with the price of a short story or poem and share your bio and URL to that book you published yourself. After all, there can never be too much marketing.
The very important thing you should know about E-Publishing services is that they are not exactly “publishers”. You’re thinking: uh, what? Publishing wears different outfits these days, so try to think of e-publishing as working with book makers who distribute to retailers.
The changes to the publishing dynamics can be a very good thing because while e-publishers can bring your book to life and available to the public, e-publishers will not require you to wait on their time lines, approvals, revisions. Nor will they assign you a large bill for marketing and distribution services which they cannot guarantee outcomes for.
So what DO e-publishers do for you? The offerings vary but a few of the consistent services offered are these:
- E-publishers allow you to keep the rights to your book: they don’t own your soul or your book decisions which are pricing, cover, revisions, etc.
- They provide you with an ISBN number. Great right? It is registered, official and search-able.
- Your edited work is formatted into a book, eBook or other. You start off with a stack of pages that you filled and then suddenly you have a book.
- Distribution of your e-published book to a retailer takes place for little or no cost. Your work is made available for purchase on-line.
- The bonus of having Alpha Sutra Press doing the self-publishing or e-publishing for you, you don’t need to have much technical expertise.
